George Marion Atwood

April 7, 1928 — January 9, 2023

George Marion Atwood, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away in Logan, Utah, surrounded by his family, on January 9, 2023. He was 94 years old.
George was born April 7, 1928 in Portland, Maine; the youngest son of William Elbridge Atwood and Viola May Dixon. He had three older brothers; William, Robert, and Stanley. He grew up in Maine and Massachusetts and joined the Navy at age 17. He later graduated from Bridgeton Academy. At age 21 George came out to Utah and met and fell in love at first sight with his future wife, Joyce Godfrey. George learned about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was baptized in November, 1949. George and Joyce were married in Smithfield, Utah on February 15, 1950. They were then sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan LDS temple on April 26, 1951. They would have celebrated their 73rd anniversary in February. George and Joyce had four sons, Michael Brent, David George, Stephen Mark, and Gary Dean.
George worked at the Logan Post Office for 30 years. After retiring, he volunteered for the Cache County Senior Center delivering Meals on Wheels for 22 years. George was an avid golfer and continued playing up until the last summer of his life. He loved watching BYU football. He was also a Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees baseball fan, depending on who was winning more games during the season. He enjoyed traveling with his family, especially to his beloved home state of Maine.
George was a faithful and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in various callings, including Bishop of a USU singles ward. He was also a temple officiator, sealer and a member of the Logan temple presidency. George and Joyce loved missionary and temple work and together served one proselyting and four temple missions (Boston, New Zealand, Dallas, Orlando and Nauvoo). They also spent 13 years as part-time missionaries at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City.
George is survived by his wife Joyce; his sons Michael (Cheryl) and Stephen (Corinne), daughter-in-law Jeanine (David), 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sons, David and Gary.
