Afton passed peacefully on April 26, 2023, at the age of 81. She was a happy soul and enjoyed her busy life at Terrace Grove Assisted Living Home. Afton was born to Silas Asael Smith and Hilda Luella Wilbur Smith in 1941, in Blackfoot, Idaho. She was the youngest child in her family. Her siblings were Ida Mae (George) Mangum, R.L. (Dora) Smith, Marjie (LD) Barrus, William (Jewel) Smith, Rex (Betty) Smith, Bobby (Maxine) Smith, Kenneth (Dorothy) Smith, Iola (Robert) Crowley of Spanish Fork, Utah and then Afton.
Afton married Melvin Leonard Phillips in Blackfoot Idaho and the adventure began as he was in the US Army. The family travelled to many places from Fort Hood, TX; Fulda, West Germany, Fort Lewis, WA; Fort Ord, California; Bamberg, West Germany; Fort Riley, KS; and finally, Porterville, California.

(David) Wilson of Berlin, NH, Jared Asael (Gabe) Phillips of Austin, TX, and Andrew David (Erica) Phillips of
Berlin, NH.
Afton has left a great heritage and legacy to carry on the family stories with her 7 children, 26 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren. She was blessed. Afton lived an adventurous life full of children, travel, and joy. She enjoyed reading, plastic craft, travel, and her children’s accomplishments. She left home and came back again. Afton lived in a small home in Blackfoot until 2010 and then she moved to Logan Utah to live with her daughter Hollyanne until her health became precarious. It was at this time she decided to stay with the Assisted Living Home of Terrace Grove. She lived here until her death on Wednesday, April 26, 2023.
She is preceded in death by her parents, both of her husband’s Melvin and George, and one grandchild.
Her graveside service will be Friday May 5, 2023, at 12:00 PM at the Grove City Cemetery in Blackfoot Idaho.
After the graveyard service lunch for family and friends will be held at the Victory Ward Chapel at 4600 Victory Avenue in Chubbuck, ID from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM.
The family would like to thank all those that made mom’s passing such a serene experience filled with love,
gratitude and peace. It meant a great deal to us all and we are most grateful.
