Betty Ann Hanson

August 24, 1932 — December 17, 2022

The family of Betty Ann Sietsema Hanson is sad to announce her death on 17 December 2022. She was born on 24 August 1932 in Muskegon, Michigan to Alfred Sietsema and Nellmarie Beck. She has an older brother, Robert Allen Sietsema and a younger brother, Joel David Sietsema. Betty spent all of her childhood in Muskegon where she attended Elementary school and High School. She was very athletic and artistic and was asked to paint a large mural on one wall of her high school.
After high school she attended Western Michigan University. Betty met and married Stanley Warren Glass Jr. They moved to Palmdale, California where they had two children, Kathleen Ann and Timothy Albert. Later they were divorced.
In Palmdale mom met a wonderful neighbor who introduced her to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and Mom became a lifelong member. She served in the Primary, Cub Scouts, as Young Women Camp Director and Relief Society secretary. One of her favorite callings was as a member of the Relief Society Presidency at Terrace Grove Assisted Living Center in Logan, Utah.
After her divorce Betty went back to college in California and got her teaching certificate. When she achieved that goal she was hired as a PE teacher in the school district we lived in. As a single mom she worked hard to support her two children in many activities.
After 7 years being divorced she met and married Robert Blair Hanson. His daughter, Tonia, from his first marriage, became mom’s second daughter. That relationship brought mom special joy. Also during this time they adopted a girl, Mary Katherine, who became mom’s third daughter which brought her even more joy. Bob and Mom were later divorced so she moved to Utah to be nearer to her oldest daughter’s family. She worked for Utah State University for many years in food preparation and cleaning services.
In 2001 she decided to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was called to serve in Samara, Russia where she taught English classes, inspected missionary apartments, held activities and proselyted.
After her mission Betty pursued her 3 passions: knitting, crocheting and working jigsaw puzzles. She spent countless hours making afghans, slippers and hats for family and friends. Many of her warm slippers she donated to CAPSA ( the abuse shelter) and anyone needing a handmade gift. She also enjoyed puzzles and spent many hours with family members putting jigsaw puzzles together.
As a mother, Mom taught us the importance of service to others, loyalty and enduring to the end with grace and dignity. She taught us the meaning of hard work, patience and doing the best in whatever situation you are in. We will miss that legacy greatly.
Betty is survived by her brothers, Robert and Joel Sietsema, her son Timothy Albert Hanson (Keli), daughter Kathleen Ann Robison (Ray), daughter Mary Katherine Moore (Dustin), daughter Tonia Lynn Hanson (Paul), grand children Jaden James, Hera Moore, Jacob Whetton, Connor Whetton, Jake Hanson, Brooks Hanson, Beau Hanson, Kellen Hanson, Mia Bean, Aaron Robison, Stacy Robison, Paige Hanson and numerous great grandchildren.
The family would like to express their thanks and appreciation to Mom’s Hospice nurses, caregivers and doctors especially since her cancer diagnosis.
Funeral services will be held at the Nibley 8th Ward Chapel 2825 South 1000 West Nibley, Utah on Friday 30 December with a viewing from 10:30-11:30 and the funeral at noon.
