Boyd Leroy Richman

Boyd Leroy Richman, passed away peacefully in Hyrum, Utah on January 10, 2019. He left behind a legacy of unconditional love and loyalty.
Boyd was born on October 3, 1927 in Paradise, Utah. He was the firstborn of seven children to LeRoy and Flora Richman (Myler). Boyd was also the first grandchild born to Sam and Isabell Richman and Orin and Emily Myler.
At age two, Boyd moved with his parents across Cache Valley to Cornish, Utah. He grew up on the family farm in Cornish and attended schools in Cornish, Logan, Wellsville, College Ward, Lewiston and finally North Cache High School in Richmond.
Boyd worked in the Defense Depot in Ogden, Utah and at Consolidated Airplane Factory in San Diego, California. He enlisted in the US Navy for two years and left for boot camp in San Diego on November 21, 1945. After boot camp Boyd was stationed aboard the USS Cavalier APA 37 and sent to a harbor in Shanghai, China. Most of Boyd’s service in the Navy was spent in Shanghai, save for short stays in Korea and Guam. He was proud to be a Navy veteran, and jokingly said that most of his time in the service was spent chipping paint off of the boat’s handrails and then repainting the handrails – only to chip the paint off again and start over.
Boyd returned home from his Navy service after being honorably discharged on April 1, 1947. He helped his father on the farm for a short while and then married his sweetheart and wife of 70 years, Helen Abel Richman, in the Logan Temple on December 14, 1948. Boyd and Helen spent the first years of their lives together farming in Idaho. Their first child, Beverly Richman, was born on March 8, 1950. Their second child, Larry Boyd Richman, was born January 8, 1953. Boyd and his young family moved to Hunt, Idaho that spring, where he rented a small farm. After one year in Hunt, Boyd, Helen, and their children moved to a bigger farm in Hazelton, Idaho. In October of 1955, Boyd and Helen had a baby boy that passed away at birth. Two more children joined the family in Idaho. Robert Richman was born November 12, 1966 and Lisa Richman was born April 2, 1971.
Shortly after Lisa’s birth, Boyd and his family moved back to Cornish where Boyd worked for the West Cache Canal Company for a few years. Boyd and Helen then built a home on a quiet street in Smithfield, Utah. Boyd took a job with Logan City, as a backhoe operator in the Water Works Department. Boyd’s experience operating farm equipment and canal-digging equipment, in addition to his patience and calm temperament, made him a valued employee of Logan City. He was proud of his work, and his coworkers loved him. This was apparent anytime you were alongside Boyd and came across a former coworker or children of coworker. Even nearly 30 years after his retirement from Logan City, Boyd’s former coworkers were treated like family.
During and after his time with Logan City, the only thing that Boyd enjoyed more than working hard was telling stories of his career with the City. Tales of broken water pipes and frozen ditches were abundant, and Boyd’s laughter and smile punctuated each story that he told.
Boyd’s children were his pride and joy. He was preceded in death by Beverly (Danny Powers), and is survived by Larry (Erika), Robert (Shelly) and Lisa. Boyd played an active role in the lives of his 11 grandchildren, teaching them to drive his old pickup truck and to raise and ride horses. He spent much of his time at the racetrack and in the pasture, and Boyd’s passion for equestrianism was passed down to his children and grandchildren.
Boyd was preceded in death by Helen, who passed away just one day shy of a year before Boyd. He missed his wife dearly in the 364 days that they spent apart and often said that his greatest joy would be when he returned to her. Boyd and Helen were reunited beyond the veil, where he was likely chided by Helen for taking too long to get there, as usual.
In addition to his parents, Boyd was reunited with his siblings who have passed away; Bernice Naef (Donald), Thain Richman, and Loretta June Spackman (Wendell). He is survived by his brothers LaVar M. Richman (Sharon) and Glen Myler Richman (Barbara), and his sister Patricia Joy (Harris).
Boyd will be deeply missed by his loved ones and remembered for his positive attitude and
happy nature.
Funeral services will take place Tuesday at the LDS Meetinghouse at 175 S. 100 W in Smithfield. The viewing will take place from 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM. Boyd will be laid to rest alongside Helen in their family plot in the Lewiston City Cemetery immediately afterwards. The services will conclude at the church with a luncheon.
