Carole Clayton Pulley (born December 18, 1936 in Elko, Nevada) peacefully passed away at the age of 87 on September 16, 2024 in Logan, Utah. She was the beloved wife of Arden Orion Pulley (married in the Logan Temple), and cherished mother of Eric (Cindy), Scott (Jill), Barry (Kathy), Laurel (Bret), Susan (Dane), Nanette (Deron), and Mark. Carole fed the hungry, clothed the naked, comforted the sick and afflicted, bound up wounds, mourned with those who mourned, took in the homeless, and shared her light in every way. She was truly a disciple of Jesus Christ in word, deed, action, countenance, and love. Her greatest treasures were her husband and children. Loving and caring for them was her greatest dream come true. She loved beauty in every way. She loved organizing and cleaning her home and making it a haven for all who entered therein. She made a point to compliment others and help them to feel seen and heard and valued.
Carole especially loved reading, writing, music and art. She directed many choirs, and said that when she was younger, she would rather dance than eat. She filled her home with calming scenes of mountains, trees, and landscapes. She dabbled in some art classes when she was younger, and her heart was deeply and profoundly impacted by the artist Thomas Kinkaid. She was an accomplished singer (operatic) when she was in high school. Her father wanted her to be an opera singer, but Carole wanted a different career within her own home. She had many jobs throughout the years from typing and editing doctoral theses to secretarial work to helping out in her husband’s dental office. But home is where she always wanted to be. She was deeply involved in politics when she was younger and truly strove to create a world of peace.
Carole’s life was one of continual service. She served as a Relief Society President five times, joking that she just never got it right. But the truth is she saw needs and was willing to meet those needs in a profoundly Christ-like manner. She also served numerous times as a Young Women’s President and absolutely loved teaching. She taught her family to love by word and example. She also had the profound opportunity to serve in the St. Louis Temple as an ordinance worker for 18 years.
Carole had moved countless times when younger and as a young mother, but when she and her husband went to St. Louis, Missouri for dental school with six kids at the time, they’d found a permanent home. They lived in St. Louis for 43 years. They cherished their time in St. Louis, but especially the people they came to know and love there. In 2016 they moved to Hyrum, Utah. The people around them cared for them deeply and helped shovel their driveway and sidewalk in the winter, visit them and administer relief and comfort, and truly cared for them in their older age. One of Carole’s greatest struggles was to let go of work and worry, so she could rest. In fact, as she was really suffering in the end from congestive heart failure and cancer, her legs were weeping fluid. She said they were crying because she’d worked them so hard.
She was preceded in death by her parents whom she adored, William Arthur Clayton and Olive Margaret Clark Clayton and Arden’s parents, Orion Sylvester Pulley and Fonda Rigby Pulley Wilhelmsen; Her sister, Sharon, her sister-in-law, Jeanette, brothers-in-law, Melvin, and Harvey, and her beloved daughter, Laurel, and daughter in law, Glee (Barry). She left behind her a large posterity of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a profound legacy of love.
