In Loving Memory of Douglas Rigby Bird
Douglas Rigby Bird passed away peacefully at the age of 73 on December 20, 2022 in Hyde Park, Utah surrounded by his wife and children.
He was born June 12, 1949 in Logan, Utah to Seth John and Barbara Rigby Bird. Doug grew up in
Mendon and River Heights where he learned from an early age the value of hard work and acquired his love of animals. He graduated high school in 1967 from Sky View High. He went on to receive an associate’s degree at Utah State University where he studied tractor mechanics. He sang with the Sounds of Zion group and continued his love of music throughout his life as he was always part of the ward choir.
Doug served an LDS mission to the southern states; Georgia, Alabama, & South Carolina. After returning from his mission, he met the love of his life, MaRee Brown and they were married on April 14, 1972, for time and all eternity in the Logan Temple.
They have five children: Kirk (Heather) Bird of Hyde Park, Justin (Shelly) Bird of Hyde Park, Jaime (Phil) Crowther of Tremonton, Michelle (Matt) Stephens of Jackson, Wisconsin, and Krista (Taylor) Payne of Randolph. They have 14 grandchildren; Seth, Dakota, Hannah, Jacie, Ava, Curt Ryan, Ethan, Caycee, Finn, Kate, Whitley, Abi, Macky, Rock, and one great-grand child, Dutton.
Doug was a life-long active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served in many leadership roles throughout his life including Bishop, Counselor in the Stake Presidency, and Scout Master. He received the Silver Beaver Award for being a leader in scouting. In whatever capacity, he loved to serve and spend time with people. He made a difference in many peoples’ lives and was always there when needed.
Doug raised his family in Wellsville and Newton Utah. He loved being involved in the community and was especially honored to serve as the Assistant Fire Chief for the Wellsville Fire Department. Doug had a successful career in sales. He worked for Ellis Equipment and later started his own business, B&B Sales Inc. where he sold farm equipment and metal buildings. He loved to be able to point out to his grandchildren the buildings that he had sold and help build when we went on drives around the valley.
His hobbies included traveling, fishing, hunting, raising cows, and of course visiting with people. Any time you could combine a hobby with a group of people, throw in a fancy newly purchased gadget, Doug was truly in his element.
He is survived by his wife and children, grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He is also survived by his three sisters; Diane Mower, Chris Oviatt, and Patty Lyman. He is preceded in death by his mother Barbara and father Seth.
A Viewing will be from 6:00 to 8:00pm Tuesday, December 27th, at the Newton Ward Chapel. The Funeral will be the following day, Wednesday, December 28th, at 11:00am, with a viewing prior to the funeral from 9:30 to 10:30am. Interment will be at the Mendon, Utah Cemetery.
The Family would like to offer a special thank you to: Cache Valley Mortuary, Enhabit Home Health, the nurses and staff at Autumn Care Assisted Living, and the numerous prayers of family and friends.
