Joan (Jonie) Niederhauser Hill, age 82, passed away on August 31, 2024, after complications from a fall. Jonie was born on July 30, 1942, and was the fourth of five children born to Reynold Golden Reese and Elizabeth Von Niederhauser. Due to unfortunate circumstances at a very young age, Jonie and her older sister, Connie, were taken in and raised by her uncle and aunt, Ephraim and Verona Von Niederhauser.
Jonie shared stories about growing up in Logan. She remembers walking blocks and blocks to family member’s homes on what is now 1400 North in Logan to help with gardens and daily chores. On drives to doctor appointments, she could point out where family members once lived.
Jonie graduated from Logan High School in 1960 and enrolled in a local beauty college. She was a beautician for many years. While Jonie was getting her hair done, the beautician (Aunt June Bowen) told Jonie that she should go on a date with her nephew that was coming home on leave from the Navy. Jonie went on that blind date with Richard Hill who she would eventually marry on August 9, 1962, in the Logan Utah Temple. They celebrated their 61st anniversary a few months before the passing of Richard last November.
The newlywed couple lived in California during the remainer of Richard’s Navy service, and it was here that their first son, Richard Stacey, was born. When Richard was discharged from the Navy, the family moved back to Cache Valley and they had their second son, Corey “J”.
After working as a beautician for several years, Jonie worked in downtown Logan at a clothing store and then at “The Cottage” shoe store. She would say she went from head to feet in her career. In 1984, Jonie changed careers again and began working for the Utah Driver’s License Division. She had many stories about giving driving exams with the occasional accident and either a trip to the emergency room to be looked over or a walk back to the DLD. Anywhere you went with Jonie, someone would comment that she had given them or one of their children a driving test. She would retire in 2004 and was celebrated for 20 years of service at the DLD.
Even with Jonie and Richard working full-time, they still managed to make time for fishing, camping, and trips to Wendover. And their grandsons meant the world to them and loved the time they spent together.
Jonie’s spunky personality and honest comments will be truly missed by all that knew her. We wish you well on your final road test….
Joan is survived by her sons, Stacey (Rose) Hill of Rock Springs, WY, and Corey (D’Lynn) Hill of Wellsville, UT; grandsons Jaxon (McKenzie) Hill, Peyton Hill, and Cannon Hill; brother Clyde (Judy) Niederhauser; sister Connie (Brent) Allred, and many nephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by her parents; spouse, Richard Jones Hill; grandson Zac Hill; sister, Laura Lee Reese Scow; and brother Clane Reese.
Per Jonie’s wishes, no funeral or graveside will be held. A celebration of life for Richard and Jonie will be held at a future date. Memories and condolences can be shared at cvmortuary.com.
The family would like to thank the staff at Cache Valley Assisted Living Center for the care, support, and friendship they provided Richard and Jonie in the last year of their lives.
