Joyce Godfrey Atwood, our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away in Hyde Park, Utah, on February 17, 2025. She was 96 years old.
Joyce was born on July, 10, 1928 in Logan, Utah; the second daughter of Seth Thomas Godfrey and Mabel Salena Holman. She had an older sister, Dorothy Mae, who died shortly after birth and two younger brothers; Jerry and Reed.
Joyce grew up and attended schools in Logan and Smithfield and graduated from North Cache High School. She always wanted to be a nurse and attended the Idaho Falls Hospital School of Nursing. After graduation, she worked as a Registered Nurse at the Salt Lake LDS and Logan Hospitals for many years. She was involved in a variety of positions in nursing care but her greatest satisfaction was in the bedside care of patients.
At age 21 George Atwood came to Utah from his home in Maine and met and fell in love at first sight with Joyce. George and Joyce were married in Smithfield, Utah on February 15, 1950. They were then sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan LDS temple the following year. George and Joyce had four sons, Michael Brent, David George, Stephen Mark, and Gary Dean. Joyce loved watching her boys grow and always made their friends feel welcome to their home.
Joyce loved doing handiwork including sewing, knitting, crocheting and needlepoint. She crocheted hundreds of wool hats that she donated to the humanitarian center. She loved to read and do puzzles and was a big fan of Peanuts cartoons, especially Snoopy. She also had a great love for music and enjoyed singing.
Joyce had a deep love for and testimony of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in various callings in the Relief Society, Young Women’s and Primary. Her most cherished calling was as an officiator in the Logan temple for over 30 years. Joyce and George loved missionary and temple work and together served one proselyting and four temple missions (Boston, New Zealand, Dallas, Orlando and Nauvoo). They also spent 13 years as part-time missionaries at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City.
Joyce is survived by her daughter-in-law Cheryl (Michael), son Stephen (Corinne), daughter-in-law Jeanine (David), son-in-law Todd Fenton, 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, two brothers and three sons, Michael, David and Gary and great-grandson Kaden Saunders.
