Margie Mae Winterton Andrus

August 2, 1927 — November 2, 2015

Margie Mae Winterton Andrus, 88, died on Monday, 2 November 2015 at Sunshine Terrace care facility in Logan, Utah. Her family meant more than the world to her. She will be deeply missed by her family here, but what a sweet reunion with those on the other side!Margie was born 2 August 1927 in Charleston, Utah to Harold Vernon and Susie May (Duke) Winterton. She was greeted by an older brother Norman and later Harold Don joined the family. Her father died when she was 3 and one of her memories of him was that he let her ride the horse all by herself to her Uncle Deloy’s gate and back. She always had a great love of horses. When she was five, her mother married John Ivan Andrus, a widower with 3 children, namely John Jr., Erma, and Edith. Margie was delighted to have a new family and especially got along well with her new father who also deeply loved horses. She would rather be outdoors working with the horses than helping in the house. To this family were added Kenneth, Louise, Anne & Robert (both died at birth), Douglas, and James. When she was eight, she was baptized in the reservoir that her father Ivan made for irrigation. During the summers she spent time at her Grandpa Hyrum Winterton’s summer range in Strawberry and helped herd cattle. She enjoyed it so much that one year she stayed on the range instead of going into town for the Fourth of July celebrations. She grew up in Marion, Utah and graduated from South Summit High School in 1945. She was part of the Pep Club and participated in the production of “Little Women” in the role of Marmee. She attended Utah State Agricultural College in Logan for one quarter.Margie married John Ivan Andrus Jr. on 14 February 1946 in the Salt Lake temple while John was home on leave from the Navy. She returned with him to live in a Quonset hut on the base at Camp Elliot near San Diego, until his enlistment was up about a month later. They moved back to Marion where they worked on the family farm with Ivan & Susie. Needing more land to support both families, they all moved to Lava Hot Springs, Idaho in 1959 where they continued to raise sheep, later transitioning to dairy cows.John & Margie had ten children: Roy W, Clinton W, Linda Marie, Kim J, Ben I, and Paul B, were born in Utah, whereas LaWana, Dan P, Nola Mae, and Jay I, were born in Idaho.Margie raised a large garden and did lots of cooking, cleaning, and sewing for her family. She also tirelessly helped outside with the livestock and farming. She enjoyed having her family around her. She was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and willingly sacrificed to train her family to live the Gospel and send all her sons on missions. It was a culminating pleasure when the last of her children finally married, all of them in the temple. In their retirement years, she and John moved to Hurricane, Utah in 1997, where they spent several happy years making new friends, driving Senior Citizens to appointments, and gathering and shelling pecans to share at family reunions. She also gleaned apricots and dried lots of apricot leather. John died on 9 March 2007 and is buried in Marion. After his death, she stayed in Hurricane, but eventually moved to St. George, Utah, closer to her son Kim and his family. She so enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren coming to visit her. Of late, she has been living in Logan, Utah near her daughter Linda. She was preceded in death by her husband John (2007), her parents: Harold (1931), Susie (1997), John Ivan Sr. (1982), and siblings: Norman Winterton (1999), Erma Andrus Young (2014), Edith Andrus (1982), Anne Andrus (1941), and Robert Andrus (1943).She is survived by her children: Roy (Jo Lois) of Salt Lake City, Clinton (Carrie) of Shelley Idaho, Linda Stowell of Smithfield, Kim (Marcie) of St George, Ben (Carla) of Glendale Montana, Paul (Sandy) of Chubbuck Idaho, Lawana Kesler (Robert) of Mesquite Nevada, Dan (Val) of Post Falls Idaho, Nola Mae Harris (Kip) of Sugar City Idaho, Jay (Dawna) of Twin Falls Idaho, siblings: Kenneth (Colleen) of Lava Hot Springs, Louise Knapp of Provo, Douglas (Audrey) of Springville, Jim of Lava Hot Springs, along with 46 grandchildren, 79 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter.The funeral will be Monday, 9 November 2015 at 10:30 am in the LDS chapel on 451 South 250 East, Smithfield, Utah (directly west of Sky View High School). Viewing will precede the funeral from 9-10 am. She will be buried next to her husband in Marion, Utah at 2:30 pm that afternoon. Special thanks to everyone who has been so supportive and helpful during this transition. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Primary Children’s Hospital or the LDS Humanitarian Fund.
