Marilyn Jeanne Cudney passed away peacefully in her sleep from natural causes on Tuesday morning, January 21, 2025, in Logan, Utah. She died three days shy of her 79 the birthday.
Marilyn was born on January 24, 1946, in Santa Monica, California to Eunice Harriet (Halleck) Cudney and Leonard Wesley Cudney. Her four older siblings were Larry Leonard Cudney, Darwin Wesley Cudney, Gail Halleck Cudney, and Gwendolyn (Cudney) Cizek. Her other nicknames were “Marsie” and “Mert.” Marilyn grew up in Westchester, California. She would go into town with her childhood friends to the shops, the movies, and the bowling alley. At the age of 8, Marilyn learned to play the accordion. She had a pet parakeet named Benny, and a dog named Freckles. She earned money by doing dishes and picking the dandelions out of the lawns of her house. As she got older, she babysat and got her first job as a cashier at Loyola Theater in Westchester. Marilyn went to college for two years at Brigham Young University taking general education courses from 1963-1965 and living in off-campus apartments. She returned home needing to earn money. Because she was a fast typist she became a secretary where she also learned shorthand.
On March 17, 1967, Marilyn married Vernon “Vern” Warner Van Hoose in the Los Angeles Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Marilyn was 21 and Vernon was 23. They lived briefly in Torrance, CA until they moved to Bozeman, Montana for Vern to attend Montana State University. Marilyn helped put Vern through school as a secretary. There they had their firstborn child Wendi. They returned to California in 1972 and had two more children while living in Hawthorne, CA; Scott and Holly. Marilyn took a break as a secretary for several years after Holly was born to be a full-time, local babysitter which allowed her to stay home with her kids. When she returned to work, she worked primarily at Mattel Toys as a secretary. In her spare time, she worked on family history and keeping in touch with her family and friends. The family moved to El Segundo, California in February 1986. In 1987, Marilyn and Vern divorced. In 2009, Marilyn retired from being an administrative assistant and moved to Utah. She resided in St. George from 2009-2015 and then in Logan from 2015 until her passing.
Marilyn is survived by her three children Wendi Hoffman, Scott (Rosa) Van Hoose, and Holly (Brandon) Bailey, and her seven grandchildren, Christian, Keller, Nathan, Amanda, Micah, Elyse, and Harper. She was loved by her many nieces and nephews. Services for Marilyn will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 645 Trail Circle, Logan, Utah 84321. There will be a viewing from 9:30-10:30 am. The memorial service will be at 11:00 am. She will be buried at Logan Cemetery.
