Michael Brent Atwood

January 16, 1951 — June 18, 2024

Michael Brent Atwood, age 73, returned to his Heavenly Father on June 18, 2024 in Hyde Park, Utah after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

Michael was born on January 16, 1951 in Logan, Utah to George M. Atwood and Joyce Godfrey. His childhood days were spent in Logan with his parents and three younger brothers. Some of his favorite childhood memories were road trips to Maine to visit family, playing baseball in the backyard, and visiting his Grandma and Grandpa Godfrey. He graduated from Logan High School in 1969 and loved playing in the marching band and jazz band. He attended Utah State University and received a bachelor's degree in Geography with a minor in History. He served in the National Guard for 6 years. He served in the England Southwest Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Michael married his sweetheart, Cheryl Cottle, on July 12, 1977 in the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple. They were blessed with four daughters: Jamie, Tara, Cami, and Chelsea. Michael and Cheryl raised their family in Logan, Utah. He loved spending time with them and was often overruled by the five women in his life. Family was very important to him and he enjoyed playing games, going on picnics, going for walks, and getting shaved ice as a family. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in the Church all his life.

Later in his life, he discovered the joy of hiking. He loved going up Logan Canyon on Saturdays to hike his favorite trails, including the Crimson, River, and Wind Caves trails. He had a season pass to the National Parks and loved visiting Bryce, Zions, Arches, and Teton National Parks. He loved visiting his cousins in Maine and hiking in Acadia National Park. He enjoyed going on road trips with his dad and brother, Steve. They made great memories together over the years. Some of his hobbies were traveling with Cheryl, reading, watching old movies, doing yard work, listening to music, and doing jigsaw puzzles.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl, of almost 47 years. Children: Jamie (Jake) Jensen, Tara (Kevin) Jones, Cami (Brian) Murray, Chelsea (Chad) DeVries, and 12 grandchildren. His mother, Joyce, brother, Steve (Corinne) Atwood, sister-in-law, Jeanine (Todd) Fenton, and his father-in-law, Leland (June) Cottle.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Atwood, brothers, David and Gary, and grandson, Kaden.

His family wants to express heartfelt gratitude to his physician, Dr. Brian Carlson. They would like to thank the Autumn Care staff for all of their wonderful care over the last year. Also a special thanks to Aegis Home Health and Hospice, especially Ashlee, Chelsea, and Kevin.
