Romeo Gualtier, 87 of Smithfield, Utah, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, from a battle with aggressive cancer. His family was by his side. He is survived by his beautiful wife, Mary Ruth Gualtier, of 67 years.A Merchant Marine in World War II, Romeo was trained as a machinist. However, his love for old cars was a lifetime passion, and many in the Smithfield/Logan area recognize his rare 1929 blue Model A pickup truck often rolling up and down Main Street.The father of five children, John Thomas Gualtier, Jack Gualtier, Deborah (Gualtier) Polisano, Donald Gualtier and Douglas Gualtier, Romeo also had 14 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, most residing in and near Cache Valley. Romeo is also survived by his two WWII veteran brothers, Adrian Gualtier (92) of Lancaster, California, and John Thomas Gualtier (89) of Vinton, Iowa. Both were able to spend quality time with their brother just prior to his passing.Romeo had a strong love for camping and the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his great-grandchildren angling at the Logan Dam just weeks before his passing. He was a tremendous bowler in his younger days and was the “anchor” on most bowling teams where he competed. However, his family and friends will remember Romeo’s great ability to work and make things with his hands. He could fix anything that was broken.A private family memorial will be held in North Logan on Sunday, Oct. 12. Romeo will be deeply missed by many.
