Susanne was born in San Antonio, TX, and like any good Texan she made sure you knew about that and her cattle driving ancestry.
Susie was always learning and teaching. She studied Government at St. Lawrence University and Trinity University, Gerontology at Weber State, and served with Crossroads to Africa. She was always furthering her education through books, documentaries, lectures, and friends.
She taught everything from summer camp marksmanship and English riding, to middle school Spanish, to senior center ceramics, and 4-H crafts. Through her long career at Salt Lake Co. Aging, she was known for being a kind trainer who was quick to answer questions and solve problems. She particularly loved sharing her garden and taking her grandkids mushroom hunting.
She met her husband, Jared, while at St. Lawrence. A classmate scowled that women didn’t belong in a geology lab, Jary leapt to her defense, and true love was sparked. They were both naturalists and filled their lives with cool rocks, bird feeders, nature guides, wildflowers, and the like. Being passionate about politics, she always had the news on. Mom preferred horses and dogs, but learned to love a long succession of cats for the sake of her husband and children.
Susanne was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Kennedy and Mrs. Anne Milburn, her husband, Jared, and two of their children; Harald and Jessica. She is survived by her sister, Mollie Wolf, daughter, Eleanor Wellings (James), their children Anne, Hayley Shakespear (Evan), Jocelyn (McKae Nielsen), Jary’s (now Anne’s) cat Sweepea, her granddog Katu, and the world’s best great grandchild.
Thank you to the friends, neighbors, and sister who made it possible for her to stay in her beloved home so long.
Thank you to the people at Blacksmith Fork A. L. for giving her safety and friendship in her final months.
Susanne disliked funerals and winter, so her family will hold a small celebration of her life in May.
She would have been touched by any kindness or donation given in her name. Two of her favorite causes were the Mushroom Society of Utah (utahmushrooms.org), and Y-Not Save a Sam (saveasam.org).
